You may have noticed a bit of a name change around here. I’ve been waffling for a while on changing “Dark Narratives” to something a bit more evocative, but I could never quite decide on what to change it to. I settled on “Notes in the Margins of Nightmares” for a couple reasons.
One, it feels more accurate to what I mostly do here — take a look at scary stuff and leave my thoughts and annotations in response. But also, I have a personal and professional interest in the margins. The edges of things, the things that lie outside the bounds of expectation and reality, the things that don’t quite fit or conform. These are notes in the margins, because I kind of live in the margins, and most everyone and everything I care about does, too.
It is a mouthful, though. NITMON sounds like a rejected pokemon. Oh well.
Cassie Daley (aka ctrl alt cassie) is having a housing crisis at the moment and needs some support to get out of her vehicle and into something more permanent. Every little bit helps if you want to buy something from her shop or just donate directly.
Bury Your Gays, an anthology of queer horror, is accepting submissions through the end of May, so get those polished up and submitted!
Cursed Morsels will soon be accepting short story collections in the weird, queer, anti-capitalist space, so keep an eye out for that.
Eirik Gumeny is running a badass Kickstarter for a pair of horror anthologies. Go support it, and then submit to it!
And, of course, my book Neverest comes out on April 25 — so be sure to put in your order :)
April’s book club theme was “Latinx author” and I got a great lineup:
Aside from these three, I’m also listening to the audiobook of The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova. I’m having a great time with them so far!
No deep dive this month, regrettably. I lost my father on Good Friday, and it’s thrown my schedule into a bit of a tailspin. I’ll be back with a fresh deep dive in May, looking at haunted houses and hostile architecture, so check back in for that.
My condolences.
